Fleet Services
Our mission is to provide high quality, safe, clean, and economical vehicles for Virginia Tech faculty, staff, and students to use for official university business.
Fleet Services is making the switch to biodiesel
Fleet Services is proud to announce the new vehicle reservations system, Fleet Commander.
Beginning January 5, Fleet Services customers wishing to reserve a vehicle will be using the new system which provides new customer benefits such as:
ALL drivers and requestors need to create a new user profile with Fleet Commander.
Fleet Commander can be found at www.fs.vt.edu/fleetcommander. Please visit this site and click “Sign Up Now!” on the left side of the screen to set up your user profile using your Virginia Tech PID and Hokie Spa password.
There is no need to enter a fund number in your profile as you will need to enter a fund number each time you make a request. If you only use one fund number, you may find it helpful to go ahead and enter it into your profile so that it is used as a default for each request.
You will need to enter a fund manager (This person must have HokieMart level II permissions. Check with your Department Head Administrator or Fiscal Tech).
If you need to reserve multiple vehicles for the same day, you must create a separate reservation for each vehicle and there must be a different driver listed for each vehicle.
Instructions are also found at www.fs.vt.edu.

Hybrid vehicles added to daily and monthly rental fleet
On June 16, 2008 Fleet Services added four new Chevrolet Malibu hybrid vehicles to its rental fleet. This is in addition to the Ford Hybrid Escapes introduced to the monthly rental fleet in 2006. When compared to conventional gasoline or diesel powered engine vehicles, hybrid vehicles are usually quieter and release fewer gas emissions. The Chevy Hybrid Malibu is estimated to get approximately 32 mpg on the highway.
"Green Fleet" Initiative
In keeping with the university's dedication to building a sustainable campus, Fleet Services has implemented a "Green Fleet" initiative, which includes:
- Fuel efficient vehicles
Fleet Services purchases the most fuel efficient vehicles possible from the state contract.
- The Chevrolet Malibu, which comprises the majority of fleet vehicles, is rated at 32 miles per gallon (MPG).
- Four Chevrolet Malibu hybrid vehicles were introduced in June 2008.
- In 2006 Fleet Services began testing a hybrid Ford Escape to compare fuel usage to a standard Escape in the same operating conditions. The Escapes are used mainly on campus, which should be ideal for the hybrids. The test results will determine if the hybrid's fuel efficiency justifies the higher purchase price. As of February 2007 the hybrid Escape is averaging 10.3 MPG higher than the standard model.
- Replacing lead wheel weights with zinc weights reduces the amount of lead in ground and storm water.
- Recycling used motor oil allows the department to forego the purchase of 1,500 gallons of oil each year.
- Use of high mileage tires
- Purchase of flex-fuel vehicles
