Parking Structure Project

Background

Plans for a 1,200 vehicle parking space structure began in late 2007. The parking structure is intended to be aesthetically interesting, functionally efficient, and extremely safe. It is envisioned to be somewhat open allowing light and air flow. Exterior materials will likely include locally quarried "Hokie stone," architectural precast concrete, glass at stairs and elevators, and appropriate landscaping.

Construction Updates

  • The garage now includes plans for a small plaza area with benches and landscaping to provide a gathering/meeting place for those using the parking deck. The landscaping includes grassy areas on both the east and west sides of the garage creating more pervious area then pre-construction.
  • Currently, the structure's foundation is being constructed.

Design-Build Delivery

The project's delivery method is design-build (D-B) -- the first ever for Virginia Tech. This delivery method enables the architecture and engineering firm and the contractor to develop a design together based on criteria provided by the university. By faciliting design and construction, D-B allows for earlier delivery of the project.
