Fire protection systems and equipment, including sprinkler systems, fire alarm systems, and fire extinguishers, are inspected and tested on a regularly scheduled basis by private companies under contract with the university.
The preventive maintenance technicians check major buildings electrical and mechanical systems on a daily basis. Their work schedule is arranged so repair to major equipment or classrooms can be accomplished before students, faculty and staff arrive. They respond to campus customer needs as they arise.
The Electrical Shop is responsible for all power and lighting systems in buildings on campus and in leased property. We maintain emergency generators and battery systems and test them as required. We are also responsible for all motors that need repair and replacing.
Elevator maintenance, inspections and testing are provided by contract with private companies under the supervision of Electrical Services. The maintenance and testing contractor performs monthly preventive maintenance, annual tests and services. They respond to emergencies 24 hours per day, seven days per week. The inspection contractor performs semi-annual inspections and witnesses annual tests.
The playing of the electronic carillon housed in Burrus Hall is a University tradition which began in 1958. To make a special request for weddings or University events, call 231-7561.
The Plumbing Shop makes repairs to hot and cold domestic water systems and drains, such as sinks and rest rooms, steam and hot water heat in radiators or convectors, water fountains, small heating and ventilating units and other related equipment and services.
The air quality crews work closely with Health and Safety Department to identify air quality problems. This unit resolves these problems by providing cleaning and repair of ductwork and equipment.
The Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Shop makes repairs to air conditioning, heating and ventilation systems, window air conditioners, refrigerators, freezers and coolers, water coolers, and temperature controls.
The Sheet Metal Shop makes repairs to duct systems for heating or cooling, fume hood exhaust ducts, miscellaneous light gage metal items, and other related equipment. The Welding Shop repairs a wide variety of objects of different gauge metals for campus building components and systems.
Technicians are available on most shifts to respond to emergency calls until midnight, Monday through Friday, and between the hours of 10:00am and 10:00pm, on Saturday and Sunday. To report an emergency after normal working hours call the Tech Police at 231-6411.
