The Office of Scholarships & Financial Aid reviews scholarship applicants on the basis of a completed scholarship application, Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) data, specific scholarship criteria, academic achievement, and financial/educational need. You must also meet the requirements listed below.

The following requirements are reviewed for each scholarship applicant.

  • Must be a dependent of a legal guardian who is classified staff for Virginia Tech Facilities or Office of the University Architect.
  • Must attend a public community college or 4-year college or university in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Must complete the scholarship application. Please use blue or black ink. Incomplete and faxed applications will not be considered.
  • Must be enrolled or accepted for enrollment in a 2 year or 4 year undergraduate degree program.
  • Must have the appropriate academic credentials
  • Entering freshman and transfer students should achieve an overall SAT of 1000.
  • Returning students should achieve a cumulative Quality Credit Average (QCA) of 3.0 or better.
  • Must maintain half or full-time enrollment (6-12 or more credit hours per semester).
  • Must file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Deadline for receipt of results: March 1
  • Must be a US citizen or eligible non-citizen as outlined by the FAFSA.
  • Must return the scholarship application no later than May 15 prior to the academic year of application.

Donations

Tax deductable gifts may be made payable to the Virginia Tech Foundation, Inc., with a memorandum reference that the funds should be deposited into the William M. Sterrett, Sr. Scholarship Fund (Account Number: 871676). Please note that any gift made by any non-Tech personnel does not relate to any present or future work with the university.

About William M. Sterrett, Sr.

William M. Sterrett, Sr. was born in Rockbridge Baths, Virginia. He attended Washington and Lee University for two years, until 1942 when he began his service in the Army Air Corps. A B-17 navigator/bombardiel, Sterrett was shot down by enemy fire on his fourteenth mission, and spent the last four months as a prisoner of war in Germany.

He returned home safely, and graduated from Virginia Tech in 1947 with a degree in civil engineering. Sterrett was also a registered professional engineer in Virginia.

Over the years, Sterrett served in his local community as well.He was a director in the National Bank of Blacksburg, the Blacksburg-VPI Sanitation Authority, Blacksburg Chamber of Commerce, the Virginia Tech University Club, the Blacksburg-Christiansburg Water Authority, and Warm Heart, Inc., a community for the elderly.

He was also elder, trustee, and treasurer for the Blacksburg Presbyterian Church, and, a trustee of Montgomery Regional Hospital. He was a member of the Reserve Officers Association, Retired Officers Association, American Ex-POWs, and the Rotarians. In 1983, William Sterrett, Sr. was named Distinguished Citizen of the Year by the Blacksburg Chamber of Commerce.
