VT TENT PERMIT PROCEDURE: Tents and similar structures present a very high potential for accidents and injuries in the case of fire or collapse. In an effort to assure the safety of occupants, a permitting procedure has been established that applies to all tents and temporary structures erected on Virginia Tech property that are larger than 900 square feet in area.

This procedure requires that the following application form be completed and submitted to Physical Plant's Code Compliance Office at least 30 days prior to erection of the tent.

Once the completed application is submitted, Physical Plant's Code Compliance staff will review the information. The applicant may be contacted during this review to provide clarification or additional information.

The information is then forwarded to the Virginia Department of General Services, Division of Engineering and Buildings (DEB). Once they have reviewed and approved the request, DEB then issues a Permit/Temporary Certificate of Use for a Temporary Facility/Tent/Stage. A copy of the permit will be provided to the applicant by Physical Plant. The permit must be posted in open view near the tent for the duration of use.

Miss Utility must be contacted five (5) days prior to the erection of the tent. This service can be reached by calling 1-800-552-7001. The tent shall not be erected until the underground utilities are marked.

Environmental, Health and Safety Services (EHSS) must be contacted at least two (2) days prior to the erection date to schedule an inspection of the erected tent. Any hazard that is identified during the inspection must be immediately abated or the tent or temporary structure must be removed and the permit shall be revoked.
