What is sustainability?
In short, sustainability is meeting today's needs without compromising the ability to meet needs in the future.
That's paraphrased from the definition in the United Nation's World Commission on Environment and Development 1987 report Our Common Future. According to the report, "Sustainable development is the development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs."
What can I do?
We can build a sustainable campus, town and nation by using local, environmentally friendly products to meet our daily needs without depleting resources necessary to meet future needs. With this comes the responsibility to make smart choices regarding waste reduction, transportation and energy. The EPA's "How can I help?" page contains a wealth of information.
