Alternative Transportation promotes and encourages the use of alternative modes of transportation (e.g. bicycling, walking, vanpooling, carpooling, riding transit) to get to, from, and around campus instead of a single occupancy vehicle.

Programs

  • Commuter Alternatives Program (CAP)

    CAP has two parking permit programs to fit your commuting needs. You can find the CAP Registration Form online but you must register in person with Parking Services.

    • Carpool Programs

      Carpooling saves you money on parking and gas, and it's the closest thing you can get to RESERVED PARKING on campus. Learn more about the carpool programs for students and faculty/staff.

    • Bike, Bus, & Walk (BB&W)

      BB&W is available to Virginia Tech faculty, staff, and students who use alternative transportation methods as their primary means of commuting to campus. Examples include riding the Blacksburg Transit or SmartWay buses, bicycling, and walking. Read more.

  • Discounted Smart Way bus passes now available to faculty, staff and students

    Transportation and Campus Services will continue to offer Virginia Tech faculty, staff and students monthly Smart Way bus passes for a reduced rate of $90. Learn more.

  • Ridesharing with GoLoco

    GoLocoVirginia Tech is one of the first universities to partner with GoLoco, a service that helps people quickly arrange ride sharing between friends, neighbors, and colleagues. GoLoco also handles online payments from passengers to drivers for their share of the trip costs.

    • See friends and make more friends
    • Save the planet by cutting the per person CO2 emissions in half or more, for each and every trip.

  • Ridesharing with RIDE Solutions

    RIDE Solutions makes finding carpool partners easy. We maintain a database of people who are interested in carpooling, as well as information on their origin and destination points, their work schedule, and preference for driving, riding, or alternating.   • Vanpooling

    The VT Vanpool Program is available for full time, permanent employees for commuting purposes If you're interested in sharing the ride with other full-time employees, learn more about the program or contact Debby Freed at dfreed@vt.edu or 231-0248.
