Renovations

What is a renovation?

A renovation is any non-maintenance project involving alteration, modification, or new work priced under $1 million or new construction under 5,000 square feet.

Our goal is to provide the university with renovation projects that are safe, code compliant, within defined budgets and construction milestones that are realistic in both design and construction. We provide architectural and engineering design services, provide estimates of construction costs, and oversee the performance of the work by licensed and pre-qualified contractors.

Key functions for Renovations:

  • Partner with the clients to establish and meet scope of work, budget and schedule.
  • Consider elements of constructability, maintenance, sustainability, safety and ADA compliance.
  • Involve needed agencies for design elements, reviews and permits.
  • Apply state and university policies to each project.

Why Use Renovations?

Work on state property can be challenging. However, Renovations staff are experienced in:

  • Building and Safety codes
  • Procurement laws
  • ADA Standards
  • Proprietary building systems for energy management and fire alarms.
  • Work scheduling with contractors.
  • Site Safety for students, staff and contractors.
  • Road Closures and land disturbance issues.

How to Get Started

The first step in every renovation request is to submit an ISR in HokieMart. Upon receipt of your request, we will assign a project manager and a HokieServ work order number. Use your HokieServ number to track your project and expenses throughout the design and construction process. Read more about a typical project process by clicking here.

Next Steps

University Policy

All renovation projects which affect state owned facilities or use state funds for leased facilities are subject to review and approval, and must comply with University Policy 5405: Non-Capital Construction, Renovation, Maintenance and Repair of University-Owned Facilities.
