In 1997, Virginia Tech Electric Service (VTES) entered into a 10-year contract with Appalachian Power Company (APCo) for wholesale electric power. This 10-year contract expired on June 3, 2007.
In preparation for this event, VTES solicited competitive bids for more than two years from various wholesale electricity providers to identify a company that offered the best overall value to our customers. APCo provided the most competitive wholesale prices. Consequently VTES entered into a new 20-year contract with APCo on July 1, 2007.
The first bill under the new rates was issued in late July 2007. On average, customers noticed a seven percent decrease in their monthly bills.
VTES has mirrored APCo's retail rate schedules in the past; however, they no longer plan to do so. While the new rates will no longer mirror those of APCo's retail rates, they will be comparable to the electric rates of other localities.
As a locally operated organization, VTES takes pride in its community. It is a goal and pleasure of VTES to offer its customers excellent service.
