Mechanical Utilities

Mechanical Utilities is responsible for installation and maintenance of several underground utilities on campus. Included are domestic water, sanitary sewer, storm sewer, and steam, hot water, and chilled water distribution.

While our main focus is the Virginia Tech campus, we maintain a cooperative relationship with the Town of Blacksburg, the Blacksburg-VPI Sanitation Authority and the Blacksburg-Christiansburg-VPI Water Authority.

Chilled Water Plants

We operate and maintain the campus's chilled water plants. Currently this includes 40 chillers, totaling over 20,000 tons of cooling capacity, operating in 22 separate buildings. Within those totals, our largest plant is the Central Chiller Plant which has a capacity of 7500 tons and serves 22 buildings in the north and upper quad areas of campus.
