Utilities, Energy, Engineering, & Assessment
The Utilities, Energy, Engineering, and Assessment management area is responsible for the oversight of campus utility and energy infrastructure and engineering services. The unit of approximately 125 personnel is responsible for supporting the university’s over 12 million square foot Blacksburg campus and includes responsibility for the Virginia Tech Electric Service (VTES), a Central Steam Plant, and two Chiller Plants.
Organizational units include:
- The university’s Central Steam Plant, distinguished by a towering 180-foot-high radial brick smokestack, is one of the least-known and seldom visited places on campus. However, it plays an integral role in the university's infrastructure. The plant generates an annual steam output greater than 943 billion BTUs (British thermal units, one of which is approximately the heat produced by burning a single wooden match) and provides campus buildings with a portion of their heat, hot water, and electricity needs.
- The Virginia Tech Electric Service has been the provider of primary electrical distribution service to the campus and other Blacksburg customers for more than 125 years. Launched in 1893, VTES is the electric utility provider for Virginia Tech’s Blacksburg campus and about 6,000 residential and commercials customers in the Town of Blacksburg.
- The Utilities Distribution team oversees and maintains the extensive utilities distribution network to deliver these critical components.
- The Office of Energy Management guides the operations of the university to achieve tangible reduction in energy consumption on campus through the development and implementation of various Demand Side Management (DSM) policies, initiatives, and projects.
- The Instrumentation, Controls, and Metering (ICM) group monitors and maintains HVAC and other important systems that must operate continuously in order to support the various activities that take place within buildings on the Virginia Tech campus.
- Site and Infrastructure Development (SID) is primarily responsible for the administration, compliance, and enforcement of stormwater programs for Virginia Tech. SID seeks to educate the university and surrounding community about stormwater impacts including: detecting illicit discharges, controlling stormwater runoff at construction sites during and after construction, and working to prevent pollution from municipal operations.
- The Maintenance Reserve Program provides coordination and oversight of the university's deferred maintenance program that monitors the condition of major components such as roofs, HVAC systems, central utilities, elevators, and fire alarms, and schedules replacement of these systems according to available funds designated by the Commonwealth of Virginia and by various campus auxiliaries.
