Upper Quad Residence Hall (Replacement of Femoyer Hall)

Construction background
The proposed Upper Quad Residence Hall project will include the construction of a new 5-story residence hall that will be occupied by the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets. It will be located at the intersection of Stanger and Turner Streets where Femoyer Hall was located prior to the building's demolition in October 2021.
Femoyer Hall was constructed in 1949 as a 35,500 gross-square-foot residence hall on the Upper Quad. It was later repurposed to house student support functions. With no major renovations since original construction and a mounting deferred maintenance backlog, the university determined the building would be replaced rather than renovated. With the planned growth of the Corps of Cadets, the new 68,000 gross-square-foot facility will offer approximately 300 new beds for the Corps.
The first floor of the building will include dual entries and faculty/staff living spaces. The second-through-fourth floors will be residence hall space. The living accomodations will be designed to meet the unique needs of the Corps and will include extra storage for uniforms and training equipment among other unique features.
The building's exterior will be in the Collegiate Gothic style found across the Blacksburg campus and will be consistent with all campus design principles. It will be clad in Hokie Stone and will feature punched window openings. The current area surface will be regraded to boost accessibility and mobility between the Upper Quad and the core of campus.
Final designs for the building were approved by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors at its March 2021 meeting.
