In order to facilitate firm gas service to the university Power Plant, especially during the winter season, an approximately 20,000-foot-long gas pipeline was installed during late 2015 and early 2016. The new pipeline is eight inches in diameter and provides firm (uninterruptable) gas service to the plant. The approximate route of the new line is from the Corporate Research Center through the new construction area for the 460 Interchange, along the extreme western perimeter of the Vet Med Complex, then along the southern fringe of the Virginia Tech Golf Course, across West Campus Drive and parallel to Perry Street, crossing Stanger Street, and along to the Central Steam Plant. This project will allow the university to continue converting existing boilers to gas boilers to provide lower CO2 emissions.
