The first Student Sustainability Forum for the 2017-18 year will take place on Monday, September 11th from 6:30-7:30 p.m. in New Classroom Building room 160. Free pizza will be provided. RSVP required.
Each semester, the Office of Sustainability hosts a Student Sustainability Forum to bring together student groups with a commitment to sustainability.
Established in 2015, the Student Sustainability Forum is held twice a semester. The forum provides the student groups with the opportunity to discuss ways they can better collaborate to achieve common goals. The student groups also meet with the Office of Sustainability team, other representatives from Virginia Tech offices, and the Town of Blacksburg’s sustainability leaders to discover the support these organizations can provide.
Students who are not currently part of a student group, but who are interested in sustainability are welcome to attend to learn about the projects and goals of each group. This allows the forum to serve as a recruiting tool for the organizations involved in sustainability on campus.
More than 50 members took part in the forum’s inaugural session in the fall of 2015. The forum included presentations from each student group regarding their goals and events, breakout sessions, and an open discussion. The forum continued in the spring of 2016, where the groups met to collaboratively plan Earth Week events. The forum also provided the opportunity for the student groups to secure additional volunteers for large projects that without the additional support may not have come to fruition.
The forum also utilizes a Google Group where members can post their events on a communal calendar and stay up-to-date. The group also allows members to share documents for ease of advertising and general planning. Additionally, a periodic newsletter is sent out to this list, which consolidates upcoming events and student group contact information..
